Michael & Mary

For the first time, Malcolm Saville wrote a book to order. When Trouble at Townsend came out in 1945, the film of the book had already been made a year earlier, though it wasn't released until 1946. Michael and Mary Bishop are 'townies' and they live with their widowed mother and their uncle Jim, as well as their Scottie dog Dougal. In these books, written for younger readers, they enjoy a series of fairly gentle but exciting adventures, set in real locations around the country.
