Oxford
The weekend commenced with a meal at ‘The Trout’ a 17th Century riverside pub, in Wolvercote, used as one of the locations for filming Inspector Morse, as well as close associations with CS Lewis.
There were 29 of us and as new comers we were welcomed and made to feel amongst friends. Saturday morning, a beautiful, bright sunny day saw us meeting at the Martyrs Monument in the centre of Oxford. We split into two groups and had a professionally guided tour of the city.
On Saturday evening we met up at The Chequers, a pub dating from the 1500’s when the building which belonged to a money lender was rebuilt as a pub. Again, another enjoyable evening was spent by the friendly members of the Society.
Sunday morning our able organiser Clive Gee, took us on a ramble around Oxford. We met at the main intersection called ‘Carfax’ and he pointed out the famous 'Oxford High' where, in Chapter 1 of The Purple Valley, Simon rescued Annabelle Corret from being hit by a bus and was caught on the hip himself
