A Weekend in Tenby

31 people attended the weekend in Tenby and we were lucky to have superb weather.

For those fortunate to be able to get there for Friday afternoon, Jo Pentney led a tour around Manorbier Castle which is just a few miles from Tenby. Manorbier is an exceptionally pretty castle set on a rocky spur overlooking the beach, with views out to sea.

In the evening we all met up for a meal at The Ocean Restaurant although, because there was an Arts Festival on and the kitchen was very busy, we had to have our meals in 3 ‘shifts’- an hour apart. We had the room all evening and people were arriving at different times and so, with the aid of good logistical forward planning, this somewhat unusual arrangement worked well.

On the Saturday the whole group went across to Caldey Island by boat and experienced their best weather of the year to date. Once there we split up into smaller groups and explored the fascinating island with its Abbey, lighthouse, tea room, shop and beautiful walks with superb views. In the evening we met up again for a lovely meal at The Heywood Brasserie.

On Sunday morning, as the children did in the book (All Summer Through), we walked the coastal path from Lydstep across the cliffs at Proud Giltar back to Tenby. This was a walk of 4 1/4 miles although it turned out to be slightly longer as the red flags were flying on the army firing range and a detour was necessary.

Jenni Dodson wrote the weekend up for Acksherley! 58 and her final paragraph is worth repeating here for the benefit of non-members:

“Most of you don’t know me as The Malcolm Saville Society is new to me, and vice versa, but to any of you reading Acksherley! who might feel hesitant about coming on a trip, do! It is a chance to be welcomed by the members and their friends, to perhaps reinforce your childhood memories of exciting stories, explore or re-explore new places, and have fresh air and exercise”
