Cycling in Saville's Shropshire 2025

An opportunity to cycle around some more of Malcolm Saville’s Shropshire locations, following the successful cycling element of 'The Neglected Mountain’ weekend in 2022.

Two single day loop rides are planned on the Saturday and Sunday, mostly via the many quiet lanes of south Shropshire. We will probably visit Ludlow, Leintwardine, Clun and Bishop’s Castle (although not all on the same day), each day starting and finishing at the main car park in Craven Arms.

We aim to cover around 30 miles each day, at a modest pace, taking in the sights and sounds, including some of the ‘Quietest places under the Sun’.

Attendees are welcome to join for both or just one of the day rides according to needs or desires - informal alternative activities can be available for any non-cycling days or partners, or in the event the weather is too stormy!

Attendees will need to bring their own ‘steed’, ensuring it is roadworthy, a spare inner tube and a packed lunch each day. For safety numbers may have to be limited and (although it is not a legal requirement) all should wear a helmet. Electrically assisted cycles are welcome, provided they have the necessary 30+ mile range over typical undulating Shropshire countryside. Mechanical support will be available in case of breakdown.

Meals will be booked on Friday, Saturday and early Sunday evening for those wishing to dine together. As normal, attendees will need to arrange their own accommodation - although you may like to wait until your registration has been confirmed, on a first come, first served basis, before making a booking.

Ingles Farm Holiday Cottages ('Betty's Dairy' and 'Alf's Bull Pen') aren't far away and it's a great idea to check out their availability as an option for accommodation and secure bike storage over the weekend.

We have explored the possible option of hiring e-bikes for those who don’t have their own ‘steed’, or may prefer the potential option of an e-bike to help manage the inevitable hilly sections.

There are few e-bike providers but we have found one which is based in Herefordshire and which can deliver to Craven Arms. Attendees will need to book this themselves direct with the hire company (details will follow in due course). However, due to significant delivery and collection transportation, etc. costs, this may only be viable if there are sufficient numbers and commitment.

If the possibility of hiring an e-bike is of serious interest to you, please complete the relevant sections as soon as possible, and no later than Friday 28th March 2025, (at this stage, without obligation on your part, or the Society’s), and we will be in touch to liaise and coordinate matters if it appears to be a viable option.
