Come to Somerset 2021
For our first, eagerly anticipated Society event, after a year of pandemic cancellations, we stayed at HF Holnicote House on the National Trust Estate at Selworthy in the west area of Somerset near the coast.
A group of nearly 40 members met up on the Saturday evening and enjoyed catching up with old friends, as well as meeting new members, for whom this was their first event. The programme included visits to several of the locations described in Saville's Come to Somerset book.
A hardy group enjoyed a walk up to Dunkery Beacon in the drizzle and mist (with no view!) on Sunday, while others ventured along the coast towards Lynmouth, calling at the Doone Valley, Watersmeet, Lynton and the Valley of the Rocks. Cream teas featured for some! Following a good HF dinner, the evening entertainment involved a competitive Saville themed quiz.
Monday's activities included a visit to Dunster and its impressive Castle for some, followed by Tarr Steps, while others walked and explored independently. Another delicious HF dinner was followed by a grand murder mystery play 'The Canine Cafe Killing', written, directed and performed by Lin Brown, alongside 4 other talented members.
