Annual Gathering - Torquay
A great programme of events had been organised for the 21st Annual Gathering of the Society based on two of Malcolm Saville’s Lone Pine Books, Saucers over the Moor and Where’s my Girl? and his guide book, Come to Devon
The early arrivals enjoyed a boat trip across Tor Bay to Brixham followed by an interesting and informative tour of the harbour led by Brixham resident and society member, Frank Shepperd.
Friday night we all got together at the Grand Hotel for a buffet and light entertainment.
Saturday saw us up early for a choice of activity. One group went off to Dartmoor for an exhilarating and at times scary walk across the moor the other group visiting Buckfast Abbey. The two groups met up at Princetown for a light lunch.
Then it was off to Plymouth for more Saville location spotting including a walk round the Hoe and harbour.
On Saturday evening we enjoyed a fabulous feast followed by a ceilidh. This novel idea turned out to be great success with a Scottish dancing display, community dancing, poems, readings, songs and a play all provided by the members (except the display dancing of course). An excellent evening’s entertainment.
Sunday morning saw our usual AGM. After coffee a few goodbyes were said whilst the rest went on in the afternoon to visit the extraordinary Kent’s Cavern.
Altogether a busy, varied, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable weekend most ably organised by David Smith and his team.
